Editorial: Back to School - Back to Nutrition

 Mothers, more than anyone else know the hectic activities of a new schooling year for our children. Apart from school enrolments, uniforms, text books, stationery and transport arrangements, there is the school lunch box to contend with.

Our children are taught to seek knowledge and do good deeds. This is only possible if the body is nourished with proper foods and drinks which build and maintain body cells, regulate body processes and supply energy and stamina.

Allah (SWT) tells us in the Noble Quran; "...Eat of the good things, and do right. LO! I am Aware of what you do." Surah 23 Verse 51

In keeping with this and to provide our mothers with inspiration, we have requested one of the few registered Muslim dieticians, sister Shubnum Haniff-Ismail, based at the Westville Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal for her advice.

For children at school

Eating is more than just providing food or nutrients for growth and development. The food habits that develop and nutritional knowledge that a child gains over the years is largely based on what he sees, hears and tastes. So when parents say that their child will not eat a particular food, it often implies that the parent may not like/eat the food themselves.

Whilst every parent believes that they provide the best possible nutrition for the children- What is the best?

  1. Is it the most popular take-away food that the child asks for, if he won’t eat the meal provided at home?
  2. Is it the meal that is offered with a toy?
  3. Is it that which was on special at the supermarket- fruit for the week, or ice-cream on special, etc.

Research & experience tells us that the best is:

  1. a child never leaving home without breakfast (preferably bread/cereal that is whole-wheat)
  2. 2-3 glasses of milk/yoghurt per day
  3. 2-3 fruit per day (preferably eaten with the peel on)
  4. a lunch box daily
    • with sandwiches with protein fillings(chicken/meat/fish/ cold meats/peanut butter/cheese)
    • fresh fruit/ dried fruit bars
    • peanuts & raisins
    • baked scones/muffins- preferably whole-wheat or bran
    • yoghurt- preferably low-fat
  5. Water- instead of high-energy drinks
  6. Supper that is wholesome:
    • Lentils/dhalls/ beans
    • Basmati rice
    • Pasta
    • Meat/ fish/chicken/Soya

Spice and season as usual, prepare with less fat than you usually do.

Why high-fibre/wholewheat and low fat?

Wholewheat/high-fibre foods helps keep children more satisfied, without providing too much refined sugar (keeping their energy levels more stable), thereby preventing hyperactivity and ensuring that a child is adequately nourished and attentive in class; enhancing performance at school. Other dietary concerns among school-going children is obesity and it’s related complications in childhood (like type 2 diabetes). We often do not realize that a child may be overweight, and assume that he /she will "outgrow" the weight.

To address these, it is essential that children are assessed by healthcare professionals timeously.

What about eating out/take-aways?

Eating has certainly become a social event. We entertain with food. With more families having both parents working, or involved in afternoon activities with children, less time is given to food preparation. The home industry has certainly boomed, with more & more pre-cooked meals. All of this certainly impacts on the childs perception of eating. This cannot be totally excluded, however, the parent has to the ensure that these are done in moderation. Moderation is a relative term, and must be seen as less than what is currently done.

Healthy eating is not about buying "diet products", boiling food or giving up all your favourite foods but rather choose better, be creative, adapt preparation methods and lead by example & self discipline.

The Verulam Young Muslim Society has the unique distinction of rendering service to the community for almost a century; eighty nine years to be precise.

In today’s rapid-fire world of disposable and instant solutions, it is a fitting tribute to the founders that this Society continues service delivery to the indigent and destitute regardless of race, religion or creed.

Multi-faceted, it is involved in social welfare, medical assistance, educational services, Qur'aanic classes, lecture programmes and the establishment of prayer facilities.

It has established Madaaris in Verulam and surrounding areas. These cater for over 500 learners. Assistance is rendered for the purchase of uniforms, school books, Qur'aans, Islamic literature, bursaries for further education and salaries.

A special program has been established for the education of reverts to Islam. Classes are conducted on Saturdays.

The unemployed are not forgotten. A weekly feeding scheme is open to all races. At least 150 people are assisted. 600 families are annually given hampers during Ramadhaan, new clothing and shoes. Another 95 families are assisted on an ongoing monthly basis.

Assistance in the form of payments to the relevant authorities are made to ensure that utility services of electricity and water are not cut-off.

Apart from these there are many other activities undertaken - details of which are available from the secretary.

The Verulam Young Muslim Society is an Associate member of SANHA and is a loyal supporter of its activities in Halaal regulation.

HADITH (Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Jâbir (may Allâh be pleased with him) narrated:

Rasûlullâh (may Allâh’s salutations and peace be with him) asked for curry. They replied, “We have nothing besides vinegar.” He called for it. He began eating and said, “What an excellent curry vinegar is! What an excellent curry vinegar is!”


We should not be fussy with regards food.

We should accept whatever bounty Allâh grants us. Vinegar has many health benefits..

For the Hot Summer days of January try dining alfresco [outdoors] with a THAI STYLE PRAWN SALAD.
1. 500gr medium uncooked prawns
2. 1tsp crushed garlic
3. 1tblsp fresh lime juice
4. 1tblsp chili sauce
5. 1tblsp fresh chopped coriander
6. 1tblsp fresh chopped lemon grass
7. 1tblsp garlic butter
1. 500g baby bok choy
2. 1 medium yellow capsicum
3. 1tblsp basil leaves shredded
4. 1tblsp lime juice
5. 2 tsp peanut oil
6. 1 tsp garlic butter
7. curly lettuce leaves

Method - Prawns
Shell & de-vein prawns. Wash & drain. Marinate with ingredient nos. 2 - 6. Discard marinade & stir fry prawns with garlic butter in a work until tender. Remove from pan.

Method - Vegetables
Chop bok choy and capsicum into quarters. Stir-fry in wok with ingredients no's 3-6 until bok choy is wilted & water has evaporated. Serve vegetables on a bed of curly lettuce leaves & topped with prawns.

A minute historical perspective of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)

Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was born in the year 570CE in Makkah in Arabia. He came of a noble Arab family. He received the first revelation at the age of forty. As soon as he started preaching Islam, he and his followers were persecuted and had to face severe hardships. He was therefore commanded to migrate to Madinah, another city in Arabia. During a short span of 23 years, he completed his prophethood and passed away at the age of 63. He was laid to rest in the city of Madinah; he left no wealth or property. He led a perfect life, and set an example for all human beings. His biography illustrates in real life the meaning and implications of the Qur'aanic teachings.
