The Farewell Sermon

Our final electronic bulletin for 2007 comes almost a week to the 1418th anniversary of the historic last sermon also known as the farewell sermon of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) that reverberated throughout the length and breadth of the world.

The address covers all domains of human life. It is a charter for the guidance of mankind regarding social justice, racial harmony and peace with all societies and was the first charter of human rights.

We have reproduced a summary below that hardly does justice to the sermon (Click here to view full text copy).

Today, more than ever, in a world of Halaal awash with rivers of blind prejudices and uncalled for splits and rivalry, the Divine Message must serve as a purging torrent of spiritual enlightenment and unity.

We wish you and our family peace, prosperity and safe travel during this period. See you next year, Insha Allah.

THE SANHA OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED BETWEEN 20/12/07 – 1/01/2008 INCLUSIVE

The Prophet Muhammad's (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) Farewell Sermon

This sermon was delivered on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah 10 A.H (632 A.C.) in the Uranah Valley of Mount Arafat.

O people, listen to my words for I do not know whether I will be amongst you for another year. Just as you regard this month, this day, this city as sacred, so too regard the lives and property of all amongst you as sacred and inviolable. Allah Ta'ala has forbidden you to take usury (interest).

O people, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your wives but they also have certain rights. Treat them with kindness and love for you have taken them in trust. Keep always faithful to the trust placed in you and do not sin.

O people, listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily prayers (Salaah), fast during the month of Ramadan and give Zakaat generously. Go, if possible, on the pilgrimage (Hajj). Know that you are each others brothers and are all equal. No one is superior except in devotion to Allah and good works. Guard against committing injustices.

O people, NO PROPHET OR APOSTLE WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Understand my words. I leave behind two things – the Qur'aan and the Sunnah. Follow these and you will never go astray. Beware of Satan and safeguard your religion. Pass on my words to others and those to others again and may they understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness O Allah, that I have conveyed Your message. `

HADITH (Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Anas bin Maalik radiyallaahu 'anhu narrated:

Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam loved gourd. Once he was given or invited to a meal. I searched for the gourd in the food and presented them to him. I knew that he liked it.

Commentary

Maulana Zakariyya Kandhalwi comments:

We gather from this that if there are various items in a plate it is permissible to take what one likes from the other side of the plate provided that one's eating partner is not offended.

The reason for searching for pieces of gourd is because it was the custom to have a lot of gravy in the curry. Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam advised us to have extra gravy in the curry to share with our neighbours.

KNOW ISLAM SERIES

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim.  He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

Muhammad (Peace be upon him)

Muhammad (peace be upon him) was chosen by Allah to deliver His message of peace, namely Islam. He was born in 570CE (Common Era), in Makkah, a city in Arabia. At the age of forty, he was entrusted with the Message of Islam. The revelation that he received is called the Qur'aan, while the message is called Islam.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the very last prophet of Allah to mankind. He is the final Messenger of Allah. His message was and is still directed to the Christians, the Jews and the rest of mankind. He was sent to those religious people to inform them about the true mission of Jesus, Moses, David, Jacob, Isaac and Abraham.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) is considered to be the summation and the culmination of all the Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them all) that came before him. He purified the previous Messages from adulteration, and completed the Message of Allah to all humanity. He was entrusted with the power of explaining, interpreting, and living the teachings of the Qur'aan.

MYSTERIOUS SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE

Let's play the guessing game – I could be a spectacular spice, fabulous fruit, incredible ingredient, vital vegetable, marvelous mineral or vibrant vitamin. Do you know my name?

In this issue we will conclude our three part series giving you information on the various types of Vitamins, their sources and benefits. Although we only need them in minute amounts, vitamins are essential for our bodies to work properly.

VITAMIN GOOD SOURCES WHAT IT DOES SYMPTOMS OF DEFIENCY
Biotin Found in most foods. Especially abundant in liver, eggs and fortified foods such as yeast extract. Required to release energy from food, and for processing of fat and cholesterol. A normal diet supplies sufficient biotin. Dermatitis and hair loss are signs of deficiency in people with malabsorption problems.
C
(Ascorbic Acid)
Fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruit, strawberries, kiwi fruit, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and potatoes. Necessary for the formation of collagen (essential for healthy gums, teeth, bones and skin). Aids healing of wounds and fractures and, as an antioxidant, may help protect against cancer and heart disease. Also boosts absorption of iron from plant food. Poor healing of wounds and lowered resistance to infection. Lethargy, reduced appetite, bleeding gums, scaly skin and aching joints.
D
(Cholecalciferol)
Fortified dairy produce, oil-rich fish and fortified breakfast cereals. Promotes absorption of calcium, necessary for mormal development of bones and teeth. Soft and brittle bones, causing pain and fractures. In children, can lead to rickets.
E
