The blessed month of Ramadaan has come and gone leaving us richer for the experience of fasting, evening prayer, recitation of the Noble Quraan, acts of charity, goodwill and friendship.
What value though was this experience if we cannot draw any lessons to uplift ourselves for service to our Creator and fellow men?
Of the myriad threads that make up this real time tapestry of life in Ramadaan, the one that permeates throughout is punctuality. Our fasting commenced and terminated at precise times, so did the month of Ramadaan and our daily prayers. Muslims the world over gave a mass demonstration of their ability to be punctual.
We should not be strangers to the concept of punctuality as every Muslim is commanded to pray five times a day at set times. Even the pilgrimage and the rituals that go with completing it can only be performed at a set time annually.
Keeping of an appointment is important as it is reliant on another person who has favoured you with part of his/her valuable time. In fact it is a contractual obligation on your part to be executed. Apart from the reputational risks and loss of respect, it goes against the teachings of Islam for which we will be held accountable.
The Noble Quran states: "O you who believe! Fulfill your obligations !" (al-Maaidah : 1)
"...and fulfill every engagement, for every engagement will be enquired into on the Day of Reckoning."
(Bani Israaeel : 34)
Why then can we not import the benefit of this annual Divine training program into our lives and be an exemplar to all whose lives we touch.
Let punctuality, keeping of appointments and meeting our obligations become the hallmark of Muslims, so that we truly can say and demonstrate, "On time, first time, everytime!"

Darul Waqaf Islamic Trust
Darul Waqaf Islamic Institute was formed in Port Elizabeth in 1992. Its aim is to fulfill the unmet needs of the community such as unemployment, poverty and Islamic illiteracy.
Services
- Welfare & Charity -
Darul Waqaf assists the poor with their rentals and municipal debts. It issues food parcels, food vouchers, clothing and blankets.
- Counselling & Guidance
Darul Waqaf provides professional guidance and advice. It deals with marriage and family counselling, substance abuse and human rights abuse. Assistance is also given with trauma cases e.g. counselling of family, assistance with burial arrangements, etc.
- Legal & Islamic Judiciary -
Darul Waqaf draws up gratis Islamic wills and assists in winding up estates. It attests legal documents and arbitrates disputes. Professional guidance and Fataawaa are offered strictly according to the Quraan and Sunnah.
- Civics -
Darul Waqaf serves the community by actively representing their interests as required. It is on the executive level of the PE Civil Society and has representation on the religious, education and welfare forums as well as on the People's Council.
- Education -
A successful Madrasah (Noorul Ilm) operates from Springdale. Aid is provided to other Madaaris including free books, copies of the Quraan and other literature.
- Planning -
It is vital that the future generations do not have to undergo long, hard routes to educate Muslims and propagate Islam. Thus structures should be in place to make these tasks easier. A Darul Uloom type Islamic college is one of Darul Waqaf's future projects.
- Hajj & Umrah -
Through its representatives Darul Waqaf aims to alleviate the problems pilgrims face in regards to visas, accommodation, health requirements etc.
- Halaal -
Darul Waqaf is proud to serve on both the Theological and Executive Committees of SANHA. The association with SANHA is in fact an extension of Darul Waqaf's commitment and concern for the community's physical and spiritual needs.

Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:
I asked the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, "Which act is most beloved unto Allah?" He replied, "Salaah (prayer) on its appointed time." I asked, "Then which?" He replied, "Kindness to parents." I asked, "Then which?" He replied, "Striving in the path of Allah."
Commentary
Although the Hadith specifies Salaah (prayer) on time, general punctuality is a good trait. Punctuality facilitates better social intercourse and prevents frustration. A Muslim is always considerate and fulfills his pledges. Furthermore we shall be questioned on the Day Of Resurrection as to how we had spent our time. The punctual and observant person can expect an easier reckoning.

There is nothing better on a warm balmy summer evening then a refreshing 'home-made' ice tea.
Tea, mint, sugar, orange and lemon juices make this a quick and easy, refreshingly delicious drink.
MINT ICE TEA
- 3 cups boiling water
- 12 sprigs fresh mint
- 4 tea bags
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 5 cups cold water
- 3 orange slices for garnish (optional)
- 3 lemon slices for garnish (optional)

Method:
- Place the tea bags and mint sprigs into a large pitcher. Pour boiling water over them, and allow to steep for about 8 minutes. Remove and discard the tea bags and mint leaves, squeezing out excess liquid. Stir in sugar until dissolved, then stir in the orange juice and lemon juice. Pour in the cold water. Serve over ice cubes, garnished with orange or lemon slices.

Place of Worship
The places in which Muslims perform prayer is called a Masjid. The three holiest places of worship are the Grand Masjid in Makkah, the Prophet's (SAW) Masjid in Madinah, and the Al-Aqsa Masjid adjacent to the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.
Due to the Islamic principle of punctuality and the set times for prayer, Muslims may pray anywhere in the world whether he/she is in a Masjid, a house, an office, or outside. It is preferable that Muslims pray in congregation, however, they may also pray individually anywhere (provided the pre-requisites of cleanliness, etc. are met).

Q: I have received an email stating that Mountain Dew contains Yellow 5. It further stipulates that Yellow 5 is extracted from pigs. Is this true?
A: Yellow 5 is an azo dye of a synthetic chemical nature and is also extracted from coal tar. It is NOT extracted from pigs.
From a health point of view, there are people who may be sensitive to this ingredient. Research indicates that a fifth of the people who are sensitive to aspirin are also sensitive to azo dyes. This ingredient could allegedly also trigger off hyperactivity in children.
Q: Could you please tell me if Simply Cereal is Halaal?
A: Simply Cereal is certified by SANHA.
Q: What is Cochineal Carmine? I've seen it in a biscuit called Dobro Napolita? Please advise?
A: E120 Cochineal Carmine is a crushed insect derivative. Muslims should avoid products containing this ingredient.
Q: Kindly advise whether the Village Bakery stores in Lenasia and Fordsburg are still certified by SANHA.
The two Village Bakery outlets in Fordsburg and Lenasia are Muslim-owned bakeries and remain under SANHA's Halaal certification programme.

I am a dried, star-shaped fruit of an evergreen shrub, with pods containing small, peppery- flavoured seeds. Often, my entire pod or my ground seeds are used in oriental kitchens, and in many garam masalas. In the West I am used in cookies and pastries.
I can be used in a tea to remedy colic and rheumatism and my seeds are sometimes chewed after meals to aid digestion.
