Editorial: The Masjid Board - Notice Of The Times

Muslim communities around the world have relied on the humble notice board for centuries as a source of valuable information. This embraces many aspects of our Deen, such as Salaah times, Ahaadith and Qur'aanic advices, wedding and funeral notices and so on.

Despite the advent and proliferation of other channels of communication and media such as radio, internet and low frequency transmitters, the humble notice board still has major relevance in the dissemination of information.

Alhamdulillah! In a move which sees the modernizing of the notice board to the electronic era without sacrifice of the concept, a Muslim company has developed a software program for use with electronic screens. Easy computers, a Durban based computer company has created and successfully tested a program that is being offered gratis to all Masaajid and bona fide Islamic organisations (see Tell us and We'll Tell the World)

SANHA commends this initiative and is proud to be a facilitator in this project.

We pray that Islamic Institutions and Masaajid take up this wonderful gesture in keeping with the dynamics of Islam and its progressive outlook.

Go on, get noticed!

Was Salaam

ORGANISATION PROFILE

Southern Africa Dawah Network (SADN)

Southern Africa Dawah Network (SADN) is a Non-Profit Organisation which was started some 15 years ago to help the disadvantaged of this country. Our organisation deals mainly with Education and Dawah work in and around South Africa. SADN is totally dependent on the community's generous donation to keep its doors open.

Headed by a dedicated team under the guidance of Brother Yusuf Mohammedy, well known in the field of Da'wah, SADN maintains good relationships with other Islamic organisations.

It is a supporter of SANHA's mission in matters concerning Halaal for the Ummah.

Our current projects include:

  • M.A. Motala Educational Centre, Wyebank - Natal (35 boarding students)
  • Lydenburg Islamic Centre Mpumalanga (24 boarding students)
  • Amouti Islamic Centre (Day Madrasah)
  • Botshabelo Islamic Centre, Free State (Day Madrasah)
  • Tertiary Students project (12 students)

While the above projects are ongoing, SADN believes in the formation of a WAQF as means of securing permanent and long term funds for the Dawah in South Africa. Our Finance department is properly managed by an accountant and a finance committee. This, together with an annual financial audit, ensures sound management systems and transparency.

All funds and donations are receipted and accounted for.

HADITH (Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Jabalah bin Suhaym narrated:

We were afflicted with a year of famine during the rule of Ibnuz Zubayr [radhiallaahu anhuma]. We were provided with dates. 'Abdullaah bin 'Umar [radhiallaahu anhuma] used to pass by us while we were eating and say, "Do not take two at a time. Rasulullaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam prohibited this except if one's brother grants permission.""

Commentary

When eating together we should have consideration for others. When similar items like dates are in a single dish and everyone is eating together therefrom, only one should be taken at a time. If one's eating companion permits one may take more than a single item at a time. Similarly when one has opportunity of dishing out food before someone else one should not dish so much that might cause others to be deprived.

Reference

Riyaadus Saalihiin by al-Imaam an-Nawawii, Etiquettes of Eating, Chapter of prohibition of eating two dates and such like together when in a group except with permission. Hadiith # 742 - authenticated by al-Imaam Muslim and al-Imaam al-Bukhaarii.

KNOW ISLAM SERIES

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim.  He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

How Does Islam Guarantee Human Rights?

Freedom of conscience is laid down by the Qur'an itself :

"There is no compulsion in religion" (Chapter 2, verse 256)

The life and property of all citizens in an Islamic state are considered sacred whether a person is a Muslim or not.

Racism is incomprehensible to Muslims, as the Qur'an speaks of human equality in the following terms :

"O mankind! We created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly, the most honoured of you in God's sight is the greatest of you in piety. God is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Chapter 49, verse 13)

Questions and Answers

Q: I have heard that Tabasco is Haraam. Is it true?

A: Tabasco had carried an advertorial in the SAA Inflight magazine stating that wine was used in the manufacturing process. We wrote to them for clarity and confirmation but didn't get any response at the time. Accordingly, the community was cautioned regarding the same.

Subsequently, their agents made contact with our offices and we directed them to obtain confirmation and clarity through Islamic Food And Nutrition Council Of America (IFANCA).

IFANCA have subsequently certified the following TABASCO products as Halaal:

  • Tabasco Brand Pepper Sauce
  • Tabasco Brand Garlic Pepper Sauce
  • Tabasco Brand Chipotle Pepper Sauce
  • Tabasco Brand Green Pepper Sauce
  • Tabasco Brand Habanero Pepper Sauce

  • Q: Is Berg Cheese Halaal or Haraam ?

A: Berg Cheese and Clover Processed Cheeses contain gelatine of non-Halaal animal source. SANHA does not approve of such product.

MYSTERIOUS SPICE

I am an item for whom men have gone to the ends of the earth, fought wars and I have become indispensable to the food industry.  You will find me in your home.  Do you know me?

  • I am a native of the Mediterranean region and now widely grown in many parts of the world from the dried leaves of the perennial evergreen shrub "Rosmarinus officinalis". With my medicinal menthol flavour, I am the cooks choice to flavour meats particularly lamb, duck, chicken, sausages, seafood, soups, tomatoes and turnips.

Have you guessed?

Yes, that's me - I am Rosemary!

  • I am a product of need with origins in India. Not of one plant source. I am an interesting blend in the main of cardamom seeds, cinnamon, cloves and black pepper with variations adding coriander and cumin seeds.

Used extensively in lamb and poultry as well as spiced gravy dishes and have travelled with the Asian diaspora to many parts of the world.

    Yummy !

...that's me - Garam Masala!

SMILE AWHILE

In a serious world of Halaal we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

Wisdom at work

  1. Some people are like blisters they show up after the work is done.
  2. The big guns in business are those who escape being fired.
  3. A born manager is someone whose father is boss.
  4. A boss is someone who's late when you're early and early when you're late.
  5. It's amazing how unimportant your job is when you ask for a raise, and how important it is when you want a day off.
