Transparency on the Table
In upholding the SANHA mission of nurturing professionalism, perfection and excellence in the process of certification, monitoring and promoting Halaal products in accordance with the dictates of the Shari'ah (Islamic Law), it was resolved from day one of the formation of SANHA ten years ago, that the principles of transparency and accountability will be upheld at all times.
To give effect to this and "put it on the table" so to speak, we have based this on four legs of the table described below:
Annual General Meeting (AGM)
We host a widely publicised AGM. The venue is rotated between the major cities of our country to allow greater and more widespread interaction between SANHA and South African Halaal consumers each year. The AGM is open to all including the media. Reports and audited financial statements are presented by the office bearers and released to the public.
Through our regional offices in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, our National Helpline, email and open invitation we provide the answers to your questions and concerns.
Publications / Media
Information ranging from fees charged, list of certified plants, discussion papers, etc. are disseminated through our participation at exhibitions, trade fairs, the print media and radio talk shows.
Outreach Programs - Meet the Ummah (Community)
Call them what you will, i.e. report back, outreach, networking, road show, etc. SANHA has made it a cornerstone of its transparency drive to meet and address communities everywhere.
This is the touchstone or acid test where officials and staff meet the people and publicly answer their questions, dispel myths and put rumours to rest. Responding to invitations, a panel of Ulama and officials from SANHA have undertaken visits to scores of towns and cities in the Republic of South Africa, neighbouring countries and some countries far from our shores.
These lively sessions have been held in Masaajid, Madaris, Darul Ulooms, Universities, schools, business premises and even private homes with audiences ranging from a score of people to several hundreds with special seating for sisters.
Contact us today for a session in your area - we shall put it on the table.
SANZAF - An organization formed to carry out a religious commandment
Established in 1974 SANZAF is a fully fledged national organization with 22 offices in 7 Provinces.
Zakah is compulsory dues which Muslims are divinely commanded to pay to the needy - an amount of at least 2.5% on their accumulated wealth and certain classes of assets. SANZAF's core activity is to assist Muslims in the effective distribution of this amount.
After more than three decades of social services to South African communities, many observers laud SANZAF's poverty alleviation, empowerment, and upliftment initiatives.
Today, the organization has shifted from its "handout approach" of the early years of merely putting out the so called fires of poverty to a developmental approach by ploughing more resources into human resource development by funding the children of families to acquire academic skills and/or pursue other careers.
SANZAF's activities cover the following areas:
- Holistic welfare related services incorporating our FARD project.
- Providing educational opportunities via its bursary project (SANMBF).
- Is the counterpart organisation to the Islamic Development Bank's loan scholarship programme in Southern Africa.
- The Student Development Programme is funded by the IDB Scholarship Trust. It provides specialist tuition to previously disadvantaged students in grades eleven & twelve so that they can acquire suitable grades to enter tertiary institutions.
- Facilitating the Muslim Feeding Scheme (MFS): It provides 17500 hot meals monthly in Durban and surrounding areas to the poor, indigent, homeless, jobless individuals, orphanages, old-age homes and refugee shelters.
- Is a founder member of the Muslim Prison Board (MPB) in KZN and facilitates prison visits etc., prisoner family welfare, and the administration functions from our Durban offices.
- Conducting literacy classes to benefit the illiterate in the community via its Islamic Literacy Movement called the ILM programme.
- Madressa Subsidisation Scheme, aims to assist Muslim children of indigent families to further their Islamic education.
- Islamic Relief Agency (ISRA), endeavours to assist those afflicted by disaster locally and interntionally.
- Operation Qurbani & Zabah: SANZAF undertakes to perform Zabah during Eid ul Adha on behalf of those who may possess the means but no facilities to undertake their sacrifices. SANZAF also undertakes to distribute the Qurbani meat to the poor and needy. Meat is also deep frozen and given to the poor with their monthly hampers.
- Operation Fitrah, forms an integral part of SANZAF's Ramadaan programme involving the collection and distribution of Fitrah money in a short period, to ensure that needy Muslim families have sufficient recources for the day of Eid and are not forced to beg.
Undoubtedly, SANZAF is the friend of the poor and needy that has won the confidence of the Ummah. It also networks with many organisations in the spirit of brotherhood. It supports the endeavours of SANHA.

HADITH (Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)
Salamah bin al-Akwa' narrated:
A man ate with his left hand in the presence of Rasulullaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. Rasulullaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, "Eat with your right hand.""
The man replied, "I am unable to."
Rasulullaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam exclaimed, "I am unable to! Nothing except pride prevented him."
Thereafter he really could not raise his right hand to his mouth.
"...eat with your right hand" - One aspect of the strong emphasis Islaam places on hygiene. We thus eat exclusively with the right hand and clean ourselves with the left.
"I am unable to." - This man was actually a hypocrite. Out of arrogance he disobeyed and attempted to cover his disobedience with a lie. This is a salient feature of sins. One leads to another. True believers also fall prey to disobedience at times but would be incapable of directly challenging Rasulullaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
"...could not raise his right hand..." - Following the ways of Rasulullaah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam is essential to success in both worlds. The modern disease of saying, "It's only a Sunnah. It's not compulsory," leads to destruction. In this instance, Allah Ta'ala instantly and forever disabled the person's right hand due to his direct disobedience to the command of the beloved Rasul of Allah sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam.

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim. He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.
Social conduct, good manners and respect for the rights of each other are a fundamental part of Islamic teachings
What does Islam say about war?
Islam allows fighting in self-defence, in defence of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against destroying crops, trees and livestock.
"Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors."
(Chapter 2, Verse 190)
"If they speak peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that hears and knows all things."
(Chapter 8, Verse 61)
War therefore, is the last resort in Islam and is subject to rigorous conditions laid down by the Shari'ah.

Q: There is an email about E-Numbers that has been forwarded to me which has caused me much consternation. Could you please clarify this issue for me.
A: E-Numbers represent specific food additives used by the industry in the manufacture of various food products. These E-Numbers have been formulated by the European Economic Community (EEC) and are universally adopted by the food industry.
The E-Numbers are categorised as follows:
- E100-199 Food Colours
- 200-299 Preservatives
- E300-399 Antioxidants, Phosphates and Complexing Agents
- E400-499 Thickeners, Gelling Agents, Phosphates, Humectants, Emulsifiers
- E500-599 Salts And Related Compounds
- E600-699 Flavour Enhancers
- E700-899 Not Used For Food Additives (Used For Feed Additives)
- E900-999 Surface Coating Agents, Gases, Sweeteners
- E1000-1399 Miscellaneous Additives
- E1400-1499 Starch Derivatives
Yes, there are certain additives which are treated as "Always Haraam":
- E120 Cochineal Carmine: A red colour obtained from female cochineal insects;
- E441 Gelatine: Derived from the bones and/or hides of cattle and/or pigs. Although gelatine can be Halaal if sourced from Halaal slaughtered animals, the vast majority of gelatine used by industry today does not fulfil this criteria;
- E542 Edible Bone Phosphate: An extract from animal bones
Some additives with a common code such as E471, can be either of animal or plant origin and these need to be investigated on a case-by-case basis per product/manufacturer.
Q: Is Crosse & Blackwell Mayonnaise Halaal ?

Q: Is E45 Cream made by Boots Pharmaceutical Halaal suitable??
A: In terms of informationat our disposal, E45 is Halaal
Q: Are Turkstra Hoefies Halaal ?
A: This product is manufactured at premises where Haraam meat products, pies, etc. are also prepared. Due to the contamination risk, Muslims are urged to exercise restraint and caution with regards to all Turkstra products.
I am an item for whom men have gone to the ends of the earth, fought wars and I have become indispensable to the food industry. You will find me in your home. Do you know me?
Have you guessed?
Yes that me!- Turmeric (Tumeric)
...that's me - Vanilla
In a serious world of Halaal we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:
A sales rep, admin clerk and their manager are going to lunch when they find an old lamp. They rub it and out comes a genie in a puff of smoke.
The genie grants each of them one wish.
"Me first! Me first," says the clerk. "I want to be in the Bahamas watching cricket and driving a speedboat," Poof! He's gone.
"Me next! Me next," says the sales rep. "I want to be in Hawaii relaxing on the beach without a care in the world," Poof! He's gone.
"Okay, you're next," says the genie to the Manager.
"I want those two back in the office after lunch," says the Manager.
Moral of the story: Always let the boss have the first say.
