Editorial: Another First for SANHA - 'Proudly South African'

Alhamdulillah, SANHA is the only Halaal certifying body which is privileged to have been awarded the 'Proudly South African' endorsement... All praise be to the Almighty.

The liberation of our land and the coming of democracy in 1994, changes in the lifestyle of Muslims who could now engage in free economic activity anywhere in the Republic, our acceptance by the nations of the world with the resultant impact of globalisation and forging of links with Islamic bodies worldwide, the need for a professional Halaal certifying body with the highest standards became paramount and SANHA was born.

Whilst upholding the highest standards of Halaal as prescribed by the Shari'ah (Islamic law), SANHA has met the South African criteria of local labour and content, high quality standards and is committed to fair labour and responsible environmental practices.

Many of SANHA's certified plants already enjoy the Proudly South African endorsement as well.

SANHA is a founder member of the World Halaal Food Council and has collaborative links to international Halaal bodies.

SANHA is organising the second International Halaal conference to be held in Africa. It will be running concurrently with one of the continent's leading exhibitions, 'the Africa Big 7', at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, Gauteng between 15-17 July 2007.

When the flags of the various participating nations are hoisted at this event, we pray that the 'Proudly South African' one flutters high.

HADITH (Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Abu Mas'ud al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

A man invited Rasulullah (may Allah's salutations and peace be with him)for meals. He had invited five men in total but a sixth followed them.

When they reached his door Rasulullah (may Allah's salutations and peace be with him) said, "This man has followed us. You may grant him permission or he will return." The host replied, "I permit him, O Rasulullah."

Commentary:

It is incorrect to attend private gatherings uninvited. If one is an invited guest one should not bring uninvited people along without seeking permission. On the other hand, if the host has enough to accommodate for extra guests then he should not be miserly.

KNOW ISLAM SERIES

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim.  He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

Social conduct, good manners and respect for the rights of each other are a fundamental part of Islamic teachings

Rights of Parents

The most primary relationship exists between man and parents. In Islam the rights of parents are placed in importance next only to the rights of Allah Ta'ala.

The Noble Quran Says:

Your Lord hath decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour. And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them thy mercy even as they cherished me in childhood."

Chapter 17 Verse 23-24

Apart from the Quranic instructions, great stress has also been laid on rendering unconditional devotion and obedience to one's parents by the Prophet (May Allah's salutations and peace be with him).

Disobedience, ignoring or disregarding their comfort and happiness has been characterized by the Prophet (May Allah's salutations and peace be with him) as a grievous sin. Take the following teachings from the traditions as an example.

  • In the pleasure of the father lies the pleasure of Allah and in his displeasure lies the displeasure of Allah.
  • Heaven lies under the feet of mothers.
  • There are three types of men towards whom Allah will Ta'ala not look with mercy on the Day of Judgement and one of them are those who disobey their parents.
If by chance you have been caught up with work or simply overlooked expressing appreciation to your parents, make that call now. Give them a hug - one size fits all.

MYSTERIOUS SPICE

I am an item for whom men have gone to the ends of the earth, fought wars and I have become indispensable to the food industry.  You will find me in your home.  Do you know me?

  • I come from a city in French Guiana and I am related to bell peppers, jalapenos, paprika and others. I am generally dried and ground or pulped and baked into cakes, which are then ground and sifted to make the powder. I am the key ingredient in a spicy hot dish.

Have you guessed?

I am Cayenne Pepper

  • Having being used both in savoury and sweet dishes, I know I am delicious and loved. People often use me in cheese sauces but I am at my best when grated. In Indian cuisine I am used almost exclusively in sweets. I give off a wonderful aroma and subtle taste when used to flavour milk.

Have you guessed who I am?

YES ... that's me - Nutmeg!

SMILE AWHILE

In a serious world of Halaal we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

We've had a great time with learners from various schools trying their hand in the competition for the lunch box in issue number 9.

As a 'tongue in cheek' tribute to our learners and their teachers we reproduce below some answers gleaned from examination papers in American schools.

  • Name the four seasons? - Salt, mustard, pepper and vinegar
  • A major disease associated with smoking is premature death.
  • A common disease of cereal crop is wheat germ.
  • Water is composed of two gins. Oxygin and Hydrogin (oxygen and hydrogen). Oxygin is pure, Hydrogin is gin and water.
  • When you breathe, you inspire. When you do not breathe, you expire.
  • H2O is hot water and CO2 is cold water
  • When you smell an odourless gas, it is probably carbon monoxide.

YOUR NEWS ….. IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE!

TELL US AND WE'LL TELL THE WORLD

Diabecinn - Cinnamon Extract

In South Africa more than 3,4 million people have diabetes. Currently 375,000 new cases are diagnosed each year! Of this number, about 95% are type 2 diabetics.

Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic condition that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin and/or when the body cannot efficiently use the insulin produced (insulin resistance). The process of proper insulin utilisation is critical, as insulin helps glucose enter the cells to produce energy. All organs, and especially the brain, rely heavily on this vital process of energy creation.

Luckily, most diabetics can have a positive impact on their blood sugar levels by following a low GI diet and doing regular exercise. Often, prescribed medication is also used. Supplements can also play an important role in the diabetic's management program.

One such supplement, Diabecinn, is a water-based cinnamon extract that may help reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels by up to 26%.

Diabecinn acts as an insulin sensitizer. This means that it does not stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin (which puts additional stress on the organ); rather it makes the insulin already available in the body work more efficiently.

Furthermore, the Diabecinn cinnamon extract is a powerful antioxidant. This is important for diabetics because it helps prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and the build up of fatty deposits in the arteries. This may help reduce the risk of heart disease - something that diabetics are especially prone to.

Diabecinn is now also available in vegetarian capsules and these are certified by SANHA.
